IOM and the municipality of Şahinbey have collaborated on a number of projects aimed at assisting Syrians under Temporary Protection (SuTP) and members of the host community. Both parties expressed an interest in continuing joint projects in the coming years, based on the success of previous endeavours.
Mr. Mehmet Tahmazoğlu, Mayor of the Municipality of Şahinbey, and his delegation paid a visit to the IOM Turkey Gaziantep Office, where they met with Lance Bonneau, Head of Sub Office, Torsten Haschenz, Senior Programme Coordinator, and Mohanad Ameen, Recovery and Stabilization Officer, among others. Mr. Mayor Tahmazoğlu has provided an overview of their current projects as well as projects that are being implemented in collaboration with the IOM Turkey and the Şahinbey Municipality. On top of that, both parties talked about potential areas of collaboration for future projects.
IOM assisted SuTPs and host community members in 2021 through the provision of one-time unconditional, restricted market cards through the Basic Needs Project in collaboration with Şahinbey Municipality.
Both parties agreed to repeat the livestock assistance project, which IOM implemented in collaboration with the Şahinbey Gaziantep Municipality between March and June 2021 and provided sheep or bovines to 40 families. The project's objective was to improve beneficiaries' economic and social well-being and life quality in rural areas in order to deter rural-urban migration.
IOM has also provided sustainable equipment, machines, and tools, as well as single-use equipment for daily distribution, to one of Turkey's largest soup kitchens in Şahinbey Municipality in 2021. IOM's support for the Soup Kitchen will continue in 2022.
